Dulles drubbed
Minister Dulles Alahapperuma, participating at a media conference held by the UPFA yesterday put himself into a difficult situation trying to bring up the objection raised at the handing over of nomination papers at the Office of the Commissioner of Elections regarding Gen. Sarath Fonseka’s USA citizenship.
Speaking to the media Minister Dulles Alahapperuma said, “Not a single citizen in our country would like to elect a US citizen as the president of our country. Then a person may think it is now ‘Country before me’ but ‘USA before me.’ People like a person with love, kindness and one who talks of development. People who have been liberated from a war would not like a leader with military characteristics.” A journalist responding to Minister Alahapperuma pointed out that there were very powerful characters that hold US citizenship in the UPFA government. Journalist: You are a US citizen as well. Aren’t Defense Secretary Gotabhya Rajapakse and Presidential Senior Advisor Basil Rajapakse US citizens? Minister Alahapperuma: You are trying to twist the issue. We did not bring up the subject of Sarath Fonseka’s US citizenship. It was brought up by Mr. Sarath Kongahage. What we said was he was not suitable to be the President due to that reason. Journalist: Do you have US citizenship? Minister Alahapperuma: No, if you want I can bring my passport and show you. Don’t twist the issue. Journalist: Are Gotabhaya Rajapakse and Basil Rajapakse US citizens? Minister Alahapperuma: I don’t know.| This article has been read 526 times |
